The Benvenuto Players

BACKGROUND

The Benvenuto Players lurched into existence when a group of 7 mums who were chatting during a mums and tots meeting, decided that it was a pity that their kids didn’t have the chance to see a Christmas panto in Italy. “Let’s put one on ourselves!” suggested one bright spark. So they did – with only 6 weeks to rehearse and dressed in old curtains and nylon sheets, they hit the stage with Ali The Barber and the 40 Thieves.

Since then, the group has grown out of all recognition and our loyal audience has come to expect professional and polished performances of not only panto, but classical plays like Blithe Spirit (Noel Coward), View From The Bridge (Arthur Miller) and Then There were None (Agatha Christie). We have also put on Poetry Evenings (which are actually far more fun than they sound with titles like The Passionate Brits) and hosted One Man Shows and Whiskey-tasting evenings from visiting actors.

We also run Acting Workshops for both Adults and Juniors plus social events for members.

Although the group’s working language is English, our members come from many different countries and cultural backgrounds – everyone is welcome. No acting experience is needed, just a strong sense of humour and a full commitment to the rehearsal schedule when we are preparing a show. And if you’re not interested in acting, then are lots of other ways to become involved: making props and scenery, costumes, creating publicity material, taking photos during a show and workshops, working behind the stage on lights or sound, prompting, make-up and helping with the day to day running of the club.

Your English doesn’t have to be perfect – there are plenty of people to translate if need be. And it’s a great way to make new friends!
